Bone Broth Recipe

We sell some pretty amazing bone broths, but when we have the time and energy we love making our own. It fills our home with the aroma of a chicken soup and it gives us the opportunity to have full control of the whole bone broth making process. Allowing us to add ingredients that our dogs would benefit from! It’s also quite a bit cheaper to DIY.

Benefits of Bone Broth

Good for the joints

Our dogs joints, and our joints, need collagen and as we all age we stop producing this very necessary biomolecule. Fear not, because collagen is easily absorbed through our diet and bone broth is a great source. Collagen is not only good for the joints, but the ligaments, tendons and arteries as well.

Promotes a Healthy Gut

Bone broth is loaded with gelatin which is know to be beneficial to the gut. There are also some amino acids in bone broth, particularly one called glutamine, have serious potential for improving digestion and repairing the gut wall.

An Easily Digested Meal Replacement

Bone broth is a super nutritious meal for pets who may be feeling a bit under the weather. Diarrhea, vomiting, kennel cough, pre/post surgery or vaccines. Bone broth to the rescue! It’s like having chicken soup when we’re sick. It’s easy on the stomach and loaded with nutrients! Not intended as a daily meal replacement.

Beef Bone Broth

What you’ll need:

  • A big pot or slow cooker – we prefer using our slow cooker, because we can leave it on for 24+ hours.
  • Bones – Any bones will do, but I like a mix of poultry carcass, a couple marrow bones and some poultry feet or necks. These can be raw or cooked.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – with helps draw out the minerals from the bones. A few tablespoons does the trick!
  • Water – preferably filtered.
  • Any additional ingredients you’d think your pets may need. I like adding Chaga, garlic, ginger, & turmeric. You can add veggies too. Just no onions! I’ll add more veggies when I know we will be sharing the broth to give it a more rich flavour.
  • Picky eater? Add liver to make it extra tasty!

How to Make it:

  1. Put your bones and other ingredients into the pot/slow cooker.
  2. Add enough filtered water to cover the bones with a couple inches of water.
  3. Add 2-3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar.
  4. Turn your slow cooker on high for an hour or two, then switch it to low and let is simmer for 12-24 hours. If using a pot on the stove this is probably best done in the morning. That way you can have it simmer all day.
  5. Turn off slow cooker, or remove pot from stove, let cool.
  6. Skim off any fat that’s formed on top.
  7. Strain the bones with a slotted spoon.
  8. Put your broth in the desired containers and put it in the fridge. A layer of fat might form at the top, just scoop it off and you’ll have beautiful gelatinous bone broth underneath.

There you have it. Delicious and nutritious bone broth made at home. Just scoop and serve. It’s the perfect way to add moisture to your pet’s dry food.

If it’s not a jelly consistency, don’t worry! It’s still super nutritious for you and you and your dog. Just add a bit more vinegar next time.
